Mykele Deville (Ft. Daryn Alexus) • "Type Love"
Just yesterday Chicago poet + rapper Mykele Deville announced the release date for his forthcoming album Maintain on March 3rd at Lincoln Hall. The announcement comes less than a week after the West Side lyrist shared a new video for “Type Love,” featuring Daryn Alexus.
The music video echoes the imagery of the song: colorful, beautiful with a tinge of sadness, nostalgic. Chicago performance artist Po’Chop pours out these tender sentiments with large expressive poses, all atop a roof presumably on the West Side of Chicago at the golden hour. Deville serves verses from a mustard victorian couch. The video is dreamy and ethereal, and extremely beautiful.
Deville spits mindfully. He pens his verses consciously, an air of introspection and a message of self-care presides over the track, produced with loving decoration by Montana Macks. With a flow that focuses on verbiage, storytelling, and feeling, “Type Love” is reminiscent of a Common record. Daryn Alexus sings on the chorus, floating over the track with the refrain “Love for myself / have I found that today?”
Alexus’s falsetto manifests Deville’s intention on “Type Love,” which Deville refers to as “the fulcrum of the album... a project focused on Mainting one’s hard fought peace.”
