Chason • "Drake Wouldn't Treat Me Like This"

Perhaps no single person in the world is more talked about these days than the 6ix God himself Drake.  Today, we see just how far Drake's influence can reach with the premiere of local act Chason's new single, "Drake Wouldn't Treat Me Like This". Produced by frequent collaborator and close friend, Drew Mantia, the latest track is off Chason's upcoming Recollections project. Here, we find the 21-year-old crossover act mulling the intricacies of expectations due to pop culture and Drake's interaction with those results. Having worked his way through the ranks at These Days from a round up post to last week's Single Slideshow from neonpajamas, Chason continues to grab our attention just ahead of the debut of his full-length. We caught up with Chason to chop it up about the song itself and to see what's on the horizon. Catch that below and make sure to give "Drake Wouldn't Treat Me Like This" a spin above.

Take us through the concept of the track.

The concept behind the song started 30 minutes before my studio session with Drew [Mantia]. I was looking at memes when I saw the one of Drake looking sad with the caption, "Drake wouldn't treat me like this." As soon as I saw it, I knew that was the hook right there. So I sang my hook idea to Drew, we built the bea,t and I decided to try and convey a story about the aggravation of a relationship and the fact that I'm a new artist, and people are going to try to compare me to someone, so I thought I would just help them out a little.

How is your music influenced by Drake?

I actually own only one Drake album, Take Care. He is one of the many artists that has inspired me, but Drake is known for his feelings and I got that. When it comes to being a crossover artist, I'm also like Drake where I try to take on different sounds and make it my own, but I do my best to pay homage to those who inspire me like Kanye, Andre 3000, Lido, and Childish Gambino.

What do you think sets your sound apart?

When making music, I try my best to stay away from samples and rely on my own musicianship when it comes to producing tracks. It's why Drew Mantia and I click. We both went to school for music and took the time to learn the theory before finding love in the studio. Any kid with a laptop can put together a beat, but I'm trying to craft something that will one day be timeless.

What can we expect moving on from here?

Drew Mantia and I have put a lot of work into my debut project #RECOLLECTIONS that I'm excited to share. Features from Angelenah, KAMI, Professor Fox and JAROFMY and SEER of Beach Jesus. Peter Campbell and I got a big surprise for everyone coming soon. Fire remixes. RECOLLECTIONSLIVE coming soon.
